The fire, dubbed the Sabiston Creek fire, is being pushed by erratic and gusty winds, and that is providing a challenge to BCWS efforts to fight the fire.

According to a BCWS tweet, ground crews will remain overnight, and air tankers are attacking the fire as well.

Fire Information Officer Marla Catherall says the blaze popped up Wednesday afternoon, about three kilometres west of Savona, near the bridge over the Thompson River.

Video shared to social media shows the fire very close to the Trans Canada Highway.

The most recent size estimate is 0.8 hectares, and Catherall says it is burning in sage and gress. Six BCWS personnel are responding, working with local fire departments.

Catherall says the fire is suspected to be human-caused, and is not threatening any buildings as yet. However, B.C. Hydro says the power is out to 419 customers in the area.
