Is Surrey ready to spend 11 percent more for independent police force?

SURREY— Surrey’s Mayor Doug McCallum says the extra cost for an independent police force in the city shouldn’t be a surprise to anyone.

The report, released yesterday, says a local force will cost just under 11 per cent more a year to operate for a total of 192 million in the first year.

McCallum says residents don’t feel safe in the city, they want their own police force and that he told voters before the election last year that the added cost would be more than 10 per cent.

The mayor also says they have had numerous inquiries from officers about joining the new force, both from current Surrey Mounties and from officers in other detachments across Metro Vancouver. (The Canadian Press)
