KAMLOOPS — RCMP have nabbed a suspect in an April armed robbery in the Kamloops downtown.

According to spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie, the incident happened at 3:15 a.m. on April 19, near the intersection of St. Paul St. and First Ave. A man walking by himself was approached by two other men, one holding a knife. The two made off with the victim’s wallet and cell phone, and within 40 minutes, a credit card from the wallet was used to withdraw $800 from an ATM.

RCMP investigators used surveillance video from the withdrawal to identify a suspect, and the man was arrested Monday (May 6). 21-year-old Mikael Wayne Stewart, previously known to police, is facing charges of robbery and using a stolen credit card.

Police are still hoping to identify the second suspect.

Shelkie says Stewart has not been linked to any other Kamloops robberies in recent months.

Anyone with information on the second suspect is asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000 or Crime Stoppers at 1 (800) 222-8477.
