KAMLOOPS — For six weeks, Cinnamon was cooped up at the B.C. Wildlife Park, recovering from tick paralysis.

When she first arrived, she was totally incapacitated, but slowly gained her balance and strength, strong enough to return to her natural habitat.

On Monday night, wildlife park staff were ready to send her off, planning where exactly to release Cinnamon.

“We’re heading up to the Tranquille Creek area, up above Lac Du Bois,” said wildlife park animal care manager Tracy Reynolds. “The area’s also called the Dewdrop. A little higher elevation from where she was found.”

The team finally settled on an area, comfortable with releasing Cinnamon near the Dewdrop.

“The conservation services recommended this area,” said Reynolds. “It’s close enough to where she was found, but it’s more suitable habitat for lynx.”

The team carried Cinnamon, who went from 4.8 kilograms when she first arrived at the park to eight kilograms upon her release, deeper into the woods, hoping to give her a better chance to start her new life.

Once the kennel opened, Cinnamon darted out with no hesitation to get back home.

“Sometimes with cats they’ll hunker down in the kennel a little bit and be a little more timid,” noted Reynolds. “She just scooted right out of that kennel and was ready to go.”

For all the park staff on hand, seeing Cinnamon back in the wild after caring for her is greatly satisfying.

“It’s the best feeling in the world. That’s why I do this,” said veterinarian Dr. Ellen Denstedt. “It was under the recommendation of someone to give her a thorough lookover for ticks, otherwise we could’ve possibly missed them. Removing the tick is the only treatment for tick paralysis. There is no antidote. Without doing that, it was more probable she would’ve succumbed to her disease.”

Now the hope is Cinnamon adjusts to her new home and her second chance at life.
