RCMP recover body of missing TRU student in North Thompson

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team has now recovered the body of a 23-year-old man who went missing yesterday in the North Thompson River.

Staff Sgt. Mat Van Laer says around 10:50 a.m this morning (May 4), RCMP attended the area where the TRU student went missing, and recovered his body shortly after.

Drowning is believed to be the cause of death, however the B.C Coroner Service has taken over this investigation.

At this time, no criminal activity is suspected, and Van Laer says it appears to have been a tragic accident, where no harm was expected to happen.

The foreign student was out by the river taking pictures with friends when it appears he stepped a bit too far and fell off a steep embankment.

“Somebody had stepped into the water, lost their footing, and got pulled away by the current,” He says, “None of the 3 males there were good swimmers, so obviously that could likely be a contributing factor. While currents can be difficult to navigate for good swimmers, it’s obviously a lot worse when you don’t have the appropriate skills to be around the water.”

Van Laer says RCMP have been in contact with the man’s family, who resides in India.

“Contact is ongoing, so we will try to keep that support going,” He explains, “Trying to do everything we can to help the family go through this tragic situation as best as possible.”

As the summer months are approaching, people with little to no swimming experience should never approach water without proper safety gear and supervision, added Van Laer.
