Seven people died from overdose in Kamloops during October and November

KAMLOOPS — The number of people who have died from overdose in Kamloops is on the rise again.

So far this year 39 people have died in the city, which is one more death than all of last year.

Seven people in Kamloops died from suspected overdose during October and November of this year.

The highest number of annual deaths in the city occurred in 2016, when 44 people in Kamloops died from illicit drug overdoses.

The Interior Health Authority has the second-highest death rate in the province with 31.1 per 100,000, next to Vancouver Coastal Health’s rate of 37.3 per 100,000.

Fentanyl was detected in nearly 80 per cent of fatal drug overdoses in the province this year, and cocaine was detected in nearly half.

Roughly 1,380 people have died from overdose in the province this year.
