UPDATE: Downtown Kamloops clear after threat deemed unfounded

KAMLOOPS — UPDATE: (11:10 a.m.): RCMP have re-opened a section of the downtown core to the public after a bomb scare earlier this morning.

According to a news release, police responded to a threat at the Thompson-Nicola Regional District library at Fifth Avenue and Victoria Street.

The call came in at about 8:15 a.m.

Sgt. Kelly Butler says multiple Mounties rushed to the scene and evacuated the TNRD building and nearby businesses.

An explosives detection police dog was brought in and police searched the area, but didn’t come up with anything.

Butler says the downtown core has been re-opened, and no charges have been laid.

The TNRD building is expected to reopen as of noon.

UPDATE: (10:40 a.m.): Witnesses say RCMP are leaving the area and the public is being allowed back into the area.

RCMP have not formally confirmed that the incident has come to an end.

EARLIER (9:00 a.m.): A stretch of Victoria Street in downtown Kamloops is closed off while RCMP investigate a report of a potential explosive device.

Sgt. Kelly Butler says the report is unconfirmed, but the 400 to 600 block of Victoria Street, and Fifth Avenue from Seymour Street to Lansdowne Street are currently closed to pedestrians and vehicles.

Police are asking the public to avoid the area until further notice.
