UPDATE: No shots fired in Brocklehurst argument

KAMLOOPS — UPDATE (10:35 a.m.): A shots fired report in Brocklehurst this morning turned out to be little more than an argument.

RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says investigators have determined there was no gun involved in the incident.

“Our investigation revealed that there was no firearm involved and no shots were fired this morning,” said Shelkie. “There had been a verbal argument between a group of men and this may have been a precursor for the one report received of shots being fired.”

“The person who phoned in said that they thought they heard gunshots. At this time, we don’t know for sure what may have led them to believe that it was that.”

Mounties rushed to the area around McLean Street and Parkcrest Avenue at about 3:00 Monday morning (Jan. 7).

Two men were taken into custody as part of the investigation, but Shelkie says they have now been released without charge.

Shelkie adds neighbourhood residents may find the presence of a large number of RCMP officers unsettling, but police have to respond to gun complaints as if each one represents an imminent threat.

“Every report we receive of shots fired, or of any firearm being seen, we take it very seriously and we respond in numbers, and appropriately attired with our body armour and our carbines,” said Shelkie.

“When you see the officers there, you know that we’re taking control of the situation, that we will be doing everything we can to protect the citizens, and also to find out what the cause of the disturbance is.”

EARLIER: RCMP responded with the heavy artillery after getting a call early this morning of shots being fired in Brocklehurst.

Around 3:00 a.m. Monday morning (Jan. 7), police received a call that two men were spotted running in and out of a residence with a rifle.

Callers reported hearing one or two shots fired.

In a news release, Staff Sergeant Mat Van Laer says police took no chances and responded with body armour and heavy weapons.

They cordoned off a perimeter near the intersection of Parkcrest Avenue and McLean Street.

Two men were eventually taken into custody.

Van Laer says no further details have been released for now.

He says police responded in force because of the threat to the residential community. He says there is no longer any threat to the public.
