WATCH: “Enough is enough” RCMP identify shooting victims, increase presence in Kamloops

KAMLOOPS — Top brass at the Kamloops RCMP detachment say more than 50 Mounties are looking into Wednesday’s fatal shootings in Kamloops.

One man was killed outside a Super 8 motel in Valleyview Wednesday morning, and another was killed in a shooting outside the Comfort Inn and Suites in Aberdeen less than two hours later.

Insp. Steve McLeod identified the victims as 31-year-old Cody Mathieu of Kamloops and 41-year-old Rex Gill of Penticton.

McLeod says Mathieu was known to the Kamloops RCMP detachment, but Gill was not.

“Enough is enough,” McLeod said. “If you choose to be involved in these brazen acts, we will take every available enforcement option and action to ensure you stop.”

According to online court records, Mathieu has been in the Kamloops law courts several times dating back to at least 2007. His most recent conviction was this past December when he was convicted of breach of probation and carrying or having weapons or firearms in his possession. He had originally been charged with assault with a weapon.

He was given 18 months probation for theft under $5,000 in October, and that same day he was convicted and sentenced on charges of break and enter and possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Mathieu was given a one-day jail sentence in April 2018 for another charge of theft under $5,000.

In 2007, Mathieu was given a one-year probation order for assault causing bodily harm.

McLeod says it’s believed the shootings were related to the organized drug trade.
