KAMLOOPS — Kamloops RCMP are reminding vehicle owners to be mindful of theft-preventative measures.

Despite some ebbs and flows, Corporal Jodi Shelkie says the amount of theft from vehicles in every neighbourhood is around the same level throughout Kamloops.

“I know often people will comment on a neighbourhood Facebook site that there has been a higher than normal amount of break and enters from vehicles in their neighbourhood. And that may be for a small amount of time. Perhaps thieves are targeting that area for a week or so,” She explains, “But in general, there is no neighbourhood that is hit harder than any place else.”

That being said, Shelkie says police have noticed a slight uptick in how thieves are getting into vehicles.

“Recently in the last 6 months or so, we’re noticing more windows are being smashed when there are items inside that people can see,” Shelkie says, “So always take all of your valuables out of your vehicle. Even if you consider something not that valuable, other people might. So if you have an old backpack or something and say, ‘Oh its just an old backpack, nobody will break in for it.’ Somebody probably will.”

RCMP want to remind the public of some habits they should practice to deter break-ins.

“We recommend that people consider the environment of where their vehicle is,” Shelkie stresses, “If at all possible obviously, lock it inside of a garage that you can lock. But if not, then park it in an area where there is lighting, or at least motion detected-lighting that will come on.”

Along with where you park your vehicle, Shelkie says keeping the area its in visible is key.

“If there are bushes or trees around where you park your vehicle, cut those down so that your vehicle can be seen from the house or from the street,” She explains, “Always, always, always lock your vehicle, and take valuables out of your vehicle.”
