Norovirus outbreak at RIH could be over by Wednesday

KAMLOOPS — It’s good news for health officials in Kamloops — the outbreak of Norovirus at Royal Inland Hospital appears to be at its end.

Interior Health spokesperson Susan Duncan says RIH is expected to be off outbreak protocol by Wednesday so long as no new cases are reported.

“We’re just kind of in the final 48 hours to see if we have any new cases but it looks positive at this point,” she says.

Duncan says outbreaks are typically declared over 96 hours after the last reported case.

She adds that one ward will be off outbreak today, another one tomorrow, and the last two on Wednesday. No surgeries were cancelled today and procedures postponed last week have been re-booked in accordance with surgical priority.

“It really was a team effort and the community also contributed and helped by staying away if they were sick or postponing their visits,” Duncan says. “Everyone learned a lot about proper hand hygiene in the community, I think, as we kept telling them the message of wash your hands frequently with soap and water.”
