Kamloops residents encouraged to take caution during cold snap

KAMLOOPS — It’s an unfortunate result of recent bone-chilling temperatures, a broken pipe and a store full of water.

“We found out through our dispatch that it was a water-main break,” said Capt. Chris Burnham of Kamloops Fire Rescue. “When we arrived we found out that the sprinkler system had frozen by the front door and it actually broke the main line coming in, so water was pouring out the front door when we got here.”

Staples was closed while firefighters helped mop up the mess and restoration company Rainbow International arrived on scene. It was their sixth call of the day.

“We started at 5:00 this morning,” said Rainbow International owner, Ashley Eaton. “Since the freeze happened I think we’ve had … in the region of about 20 to 25.”

When temperatures reach -10 C and colder, pipes can begin to freeze, especially when homes are poorly heated.

“Even when you’re away you should always keep your home kind of at 10 to 15 degrees,” Eaton said. “So, still make sure it’s just above that freezing point so that your pipes don’t freeze.”

Kamloops is experiencing its coldest temperatures yet this winter due to an arctic cold front coming down into central B.C. and the Southern Interior.

It’s not cold enough to prompt Environment Canada to put out extreme cold warnings, but extra caution is recommended for those working outside.

“Anybody who’s going to be outdoors for any considerable amount of time needs to make sure they’re dressed warmly, they’re covering any exposed skin,” said Bobby Sekhon, meteorologist with Environment Canada. “About -27 C, whether that’s the temperature or with wind chill, that is where things start to get a little bit more dangerous.”

Temperatures plunged below -20 C Tuesday morning, with wind chills as low as -28 C.

For those who dressed warm, the conditions were bearable.

“I’ve got four layers down below, I’ve got three layers above, just my eyes are showing so that’s the only thing that seems to be cold,” said Meghan Power, who works for Home Hardware making deliveries. “It’s actually still pretty nice out for Kamloops.”

Slightly warmer temperatures are expected later this week, before another shot of cold weather returns on the weekend.
