Snow in the forecast brings renewed call for Snow Angel volunteers

KAMLOOPS — With a dump of the white stuff coming in the next few days, Volunteer Kamloops is still looking for people to sign up for its Snow Angels program.

The program matches volunteers willing to shovel driveways and walkways with seniors who have physical difficulty doing those tasks themselves.

Program Co-ordinator Taylor Rae says the program still needs dozens of able-bodied shovelers to sign up.

“We’ve had a couple hundred people register for Snow Angels this season. Currently, we have a little over 50 people who haven’t been matched, and about the same have been,” said Rae. “So we still have quite a few people to match, mostly on the North Shore.”

In addition to the North Shore, Rae says there are a few key areas of the city still in need of help.

“We also have a couple people up in Rose Hill who I haven’t been able to match at all because there’s just nobody out in that area who is volunteering,” said Rae. “And then a couple scattered people in the Valleyview-Barnhartvale region.”

Volunteers get a free Domino’s Pizza each time they shovel, and get a free toque from Volunteer Kamloops.

Rae says in addition, you could save someone from serious injury.

“We’ve had a few people call because they haven’t been able to get matched with a Snow Angel, and we’ve had a few seniors say that they have received some injuries this year trying to be out there shoveling their own walkways.”

To sign up, call Rae at (250) 372-8313 or go to www.volunteerkamloops.org. Each volunteer requires a criminal record check from the RCMP.
