KAMLOOPS — Three more retail cannabis stores have been approved by Kamloops city council, but for the first time since legalization, one application has been rejected.

At today’s meeting, five councillors and mayor Ken Christian had to decide whether or not to approve the application for 6-685 Tranquille Rd. Councillors Dale Bass and Arjun Singh were not present, while Councillor Denis Walsh had previously announced a conflict of interest when it comes to discussions surrounding cannabis.

The application was defeated in a 4-2 vote, with only Councillor Sadie Hunter and Christian approving it.

The most vocal opposition today came from representatives of Lii Michif Otipemisiwak Family and Community Services. The organization voiced concerns over a cannabis store being next door to their organization, which helps those who have aged out of the system along with people struggling with addictions.

Sinclair echoed those concerns.

“I believe that this would have effect on the community in a way that would be negative,” she said. “There are individuals who go through detox and recovery for cannabis, and putting families who have already struggled with addictions recovery in this situation, I don’t believe that this is the right location.”

The three other retail cannabis licence applications were approved unanimously and will go on to seek provincial approval.

Those proposed locations are for the Walmart Plaza, downtown near Fourth Avenue and Lansdowne Street, and Oriole Road in Valleyview.
