KAMLOOPS — RCMP suspect impaired driving contributed to a terrible crash on Westsyde Road Sunday night (Feb. 24).

In a news release, Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says officers were called to the scene near Westsyde Road and McQueen Drive at about 7:40 p.m.

There they found a collision between a Toyota Corolla and a Hyundai Elantra.

Investigators believe the Toyota was travelling southbound, crossed the centre line and hit the Hyundai.

Three occupants — one in the Toyota and two in the Hyundai — were all injured and taken to hospital.

Shelkie says the passenger in the Hyundai has critical injuries.

Video from the scene shows an RCMP officer removing a clip from a firearm found in one of the vehicles, but Shelkie says it was just a pellet gun.

Witnesses say just prior to the crash, the Toyota was driving erratically.

That has, in part, led RCMP to believe impaired driving was a contributing factor in the crash.

Westsyde Road was closed overnight while police investigated and crews cleaned up. It was re-opened at about 4:00 a.m. Monday.

Any more witnesses are asked to contact Kamloops RCMP at (250) 828-3000.
