Sam Smith’s Liposuction Story

Sam Smith is opening up about getting liposuction surgery when he was just 12-years-old. The now 26-year-old explained that as a preteen, he was bullied because he “had breasts.”

“I had liposuction, I was 12-years-old. At the time I think I was very happy about it. It didn’t really change anything,” Sam explained to Jameela Jamil as part of her new Instagram TV series, I Weigh Interviews.

He continued, “I think I put the weight back on in two weeks because I hadn’t figured out my relationship with food, so it didn’t really change anything. But being 12 years old and having liposuction on your chest is quite a big deal.”

Sam says he’s speaking out about body image now because he doesn’t hear many guys talking about the issue. He calls his problems with his weight “the basis for all my sadness.”

During the interview, Sam also revealed he identifies as non-binary. During the interview, Jameela asked what “non-binary, genderqueer” identity means to Sam.

“You do not identify in a gender. You are just you…you are your own special creation. That is how I take it. I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between – somewhat on the spectrum,” Sam said.

“I’ve always had a bit of a war in my body and my mind…I do think like a woman in my head at times,” Sam said. “I’ve sometimes sat there and questioned, do I want a sex change? It’s something I still think about, but I don’t think it is.”

“I’ve always been very free in terms of thinking about sexuality. I’ve tried to change that into my thoughts on gender…when I move, when I have sex with men, it’s very feminine. I’m feminine in many ways – and I’ve resented that.”

Along with the video, Sam wrote on Instagram, “I know this sounds dramatic but this interview completely changed my life.”

He added, “It took a lot for me to do this and I was so nervous, so please be kind haha. I really hope this can make someone else who feels like me, a little less lonely and a little less alien.”
