KAMLOOPS — Interior Health has issued an overdose alert after several overdose deaths in the region linked to carfentanil.

In a news release, IH and the BC Coroners Service say anyone using or considering using drugs is urged to take steps to prevent overdose.

There were 19 overdose deaths with carfentanil detected across the province in March, with seven of those being in the Interior Health Authority. IH says it’s unclear which substances carfentanil has been detected in.

Carfentanil is a synthetic opioid normally used as a sedative for large animals. It’s similar to fentanyl, but can be 100 times more toxic. The drug also can’t be detected by fentanyl strips, and ingesting one or two grains can be fatal to humans.

People considering using drugs are urged to avoid it, but those who are using are given this advice:

  • Don’t mix different drugs
  • Don’t take drugs when you are alone
  • Keep an eye out for your friends – stay together and look out for each other
  • Use less and pace yourself. Do testers to check strength.
  • Carry a naloxone kit and know how to use it
  • Recognize the signs of an overdose: slow or no breathing, gurgling or gasping, lips/fingertips turning blue, difficult to awaken, or non-responsive.
  • If someone is experiencing an overdose or is witnessing an overdose, follow the SAVE ME steps and call 9-1-1 immediately.
  • Use an overdose prevention site or supervised consumption site if available in your community
  • Consider treatment options
