City of Kamloops staff to investigate plastic bag ban

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops council has directed staff to come up with the framework for a ban on single-use plastic bags being offered by local retailers.

The move came after much wrangling about what a new bylaw could include, and eventually plastic straws and cutlery were removed from consideration for a ban.

Councillor Dieter Dudy says it’s a step in the right direction.

“We’re not doing this for ourselves; we’re doing this for the ones who can’t do anything about this. We have a choice — we can either use this plastic or get rid of it. But the whales and the fish and the birds… don’t have that choice. It gets broken up and it gets into their diets,” said Dudy.

Councillor Mike O’Reilly asked that council also look at the issue with a wider lens.

“This seems like easy picking because it’s something to do. But it’s a tax on retail, it’s a tax on small business and it’s hard work for small business to find [options]. I would be more in favour for staff to look at a full, comprehensive commercial recycling program,” said O’Reilly.

Council also directed the city’s Development and Sustainability Committee to investigate the merits of banning all single-use products, as well as research a commercial recycling program for city businesses.
