Ask a City Councillor event aims for in-person engagement

KAMLOOPS — Members of Kamloops council hope to reach beyond online interactions with the public this week as they host a small question-and-answer session.

‘Ask a City Councillor Kamloops 1.0’ will have Kathy Sinclair, Bill Sarai, Sadie Hunter, and Mike O’Reilly taking part.

After Thursday’s informal meet up, Sinclair says there are plans to hold more of the four-councillor sessions in the futures.

She says they’re expecting to address and field questions from the public on a few specific topics.

“Obviously some interest in the plastic bags phase out that happened yesterday at council. There’s been quite a bit of discussion about transit. The proposed changes that BC Transit is going to be making to fares and particularly transfers. West Victoria is a big issue right now, and just how that is going to impact commuting.”

Sinclair says the purpose of ‘Ask a City Councillor’ is for Kamloops residents to have a chance to engage councillors on a personal level, and hear more than what might be presented online.

“They may see the meetings take place on Tuesday afternoons, they see the headlines, they may react and comment on social media, but I think the face-to-face is really important, and being able to explain, well why did you vote a certain way on an issue?”

The event will be hosted Thursday (April 4) at Moustache and Go, located at 441 Tranquille Road, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
