Cameranesi leads U.S. in 8-0 win over Swiss at women’s world hockey championship

ESPOO, Finland — Dani Cameranesi had two goals and an assist to pace the United States to an 8-0 shutout of Switzerland in the group stage at the women’s world hockey championship Sunday.

The U.S. topped Group A with nine points ahead of Canada, Russia and Finland, all tied with three. Switzerland was winless in three games.

Amanda Kessel and Megan Keller each had a pair of goals, while Alex Carpenter and Hilary Knight also scored for the defending champions.

American goaltender Maddie Rooney needed only six saves for the shutout, while Swiss counterpart Janine Alder was peppered with 57 shots.

After falling 3-2 to the U.S. on Saturday night, Canada had a day off before back-to-back games against Russia and Finland on Monday and Tuesday respectively.

The U.S. concludes group play Tuesday against Russia.

Sweden doubled France 2-1 in Group B in the only other game Sunday.

The Swedes moved into third place in the group with four points behind the Czech Republic, in first with six, and Germany with five.

Japan has one point and promoted France was winless in three games.

Trailing 1-0 after one period, the Swedes got goals from Pernilla Winberg and Melinda Olsson in the second. Laura Escudero scored for the French.

Sara Grahn stopped 19 of 20 shots for the win in Sweden’s net. Caroline Baldin was the busier of the two goalies with 38 saves.

All five countries in Group A and the top three in Group B play quarterfinal games April 11.

The semifinals are April 13 followed by medal games April 14.
