KAMLOOPS — The first ever, local “Light the Night” campaign will illuminate Kamloops this Saturday, supporting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.

After his wife, Nancy, passed away last year from Leukemia, Organizer Shane Hanna decided to bring the walk to Kamloops to honour her memory.

Hanna says the response has been fantastic in Kamloops.

“I get pretty emotional about it sometimes because I didn’t know how it would work out, I didn’t know how it would really be, and I’ve been really blown away.”

The event is expecting over 100 walkers, and Hanna says so far they have reached the $8,000 fundraising goal.

Given how important research is around blood cancers, Hanna says he’s glad to see support growing.

“One of the interesting stats I think is over 40 per cent of therapies for all cancers have been discovered through the leukemia process- through blood cancers,” He says, “They’re looking for cures, so it might be therapies and that for breast cancer, and any other types of cancers, but it started with blood cancers. So everything we’re doing is really affecting all types of cancer.”

The event kicks off from Riverside Park this Saturday evening, with registration at 5pm, and the walk beginning at 7pm.
