‘Do Not Use’ order lifted for the North Thompson River

KAMLOOPS — Interior Health has lifted a ‘Do Not Use’ order in place since last week for the Vavenby water system.

The order was enacted after a crash last Monday that resulted in about 800 litres of diesel fuel spilling into the North Thompson River, the source of Vavenby’s water.

Thompson-Nicola Regional District Director of Environmental Services Jake Devlin says test results have been clear.

“To date we have 18 test results in. So far, 17 showed no traceable hydrocarbons at all. One was inconclusive, and we are having that re-sampled. We are going to get three more tests in today, which will be available shortly,” said Devlin.

Devlin notes a Water Quality Advisory remains in place, but that is normal for the region, and residents are used to it.

He adds it’s fortunate diesel was the only substance dumped into the river as a result of last week’s crash.
