KAMLOOPS — It’s been nearly three weeks since Merritt city council rejected a rainbow crosswalk that would have been painted in front of Merritt Secondary School. Since then, some members of the community and several businesses have rallied behind the students and school district.

Local businesses like Brambles Bakery & Cafe have rainbow stickers on their front doors and have them available for customers to take home. The bakery also made special rainbow-themed cookies that were sent to City Hall to show they support a rainbow crosswalk.

“The owners, Sarah and Dorothy, made a care package for city council, some rainbow cookies in honour of the crosswalk just with a letter alongside it saying we’re definitely in support, not in support of their decision but in support of the crosswalk,” said Brambles employee Katie Huber.

“98 per cent is very positive. You have the odd person, old Merritt redneck that comes in and is definitely not in support. We’ve had some people face the stickers down because they can’t look at them, which is very unfortunate. They’re just stickers.”

Customers have been making donations in exchange for the stickers. The campaign has raised a few hundred dollars that will go towards a safe space for those who identify as LGBTQ2S, which will be operated by Interior Community Services at a former Anglican Church on Chapman Street. Meantime, the employees at Brambles are happy to support the cause.

“Yeah it feels really good,” said Huber. “There’s obviously lots of talk about, and Merritt being a very small community its kind of the big talk of the town right now. It feels really good to be on the positive side of things.”
