NDP creates awards program to recognize people who helped in floods and wildfires

KAMLOOPS — The NDP is calling on the public to nominate someone who stepped up to help duing this year’s floods and wildfires.

Speaking at a stop in Kamloops Saturday, Premier John Horgan announced the government has created the ‘Above and Beyond Awards Program’ where people can submit their nominations.

“Those who opened their homes to people and pets, cooked meals for evacuees, and offered up comfort in a difficult time showed a true community spirit that needs to be celebrated,” said Premier Horgan.

More than 45-thousand people were evacuated during the wildfire season.

Numerous homes were also damaged or destroyed during this springs floods.

While devestating, the NDP says the events showcased the best in humanity.

“Through the adversity of the floods and wildfires in the Interior over this past spring and summer, the strength and resilience of British Columbians shone through,” said Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Minister Doug Donaldson. “We need to recognize and celebrate the incredible work that people from all walks of life offered to help neighbours and strangers in need.”

Firefighters, first responders, or anyone else in the province can be nominated here.

Everyone who is nominated will receive a certificate of distinction, signed by Premier Horgan.

The nomination deadline is Jan 15.
