Singapore requests U.K. extradite a Canadian accused of robbing a bank

LONDON — Authorities in Singapore say they’re working to have a Canadian man who is accused of robbing a bank in their country extradited from the United Kingdom.

A statement from Singapore’s Attorney General’s Chambers and its Ministry of Home Affairs says David James Roach was detained in London last week.

It says Roach is wanted in connection with a July 2016 robbery in which nearly $29,000 was stolen from a branch of the Standard Chartered Bank in Singapore.

The robbery was considered a rarity in Singapore, which has a low crime rate.

The statement says Roach flew to Bangkok after the theft, where he was arrested and served prison time for alleged crimes committed there.

Singaporean authorities say Roach was deported from Thailand after his time in prison and arrived in London where he was detained on Thursday. They say they’re working with U.K. authorities to begin extradition proceedings.

Representatives for Global Affairs Canada did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
