Canada’s Bianca Andreescu advances to second round of qualifying at Rogers Cup
MONTREAL — Bianca Andreescu is the last Canadian remaining with a chance to qualify for the women’s main draw of the Roger Cup after beating Samantha Crawford of the United States on Saturday.
Andreescu downed Crawford 7-6 (3), 7-5 to advance to the second round of the qualifying portion of the tournament.
The 16-year-old Andreescu, from Mississauga, Ont., will face Ukraine’s Kateryna Bondarenko on Sunday. A victory would move her into the main draw, which begins first-round action on Monday.
Saturday was a difficult day for Canadian women’s qualifiers, with 10 of the 11 participants dropping their matches.
