KAMLOOPS — A new owner is breathing new life into the heritage Plaza Hotel in downtown Kamloops.

The hotel was recently purchased by Sumer Dhillon, who already owns Tumbleweeds neighbourhood pub in Dallas.

Dhillon says he was looking to expand his holdings in Kamloops, and when he saw the Plaza was put up for sale, jumped at the chance.

“It has the heritage value and it is a boutique hotel – I think the only one in Kamloops. You can have five-star, you can have everything, but this hotel has its own value.”

Dhillon notes new ownership means the re-opening of the hotel’s lounge, most recently named Fireside Steakhouse and Bar.

“We are just now concentrating on opening the lounge. We might open it by the first week of August. We’ll be hiring the previous staff back again, so we’ll hire around 15 to 20 people.”

Fireside was closed in February.
