KAMLOOPS — A Kamloops woman who doused her two children in a solvent and set them on fire, killing one, has had her freedoms expanded.

Donna Hysop, now 50, was convicted of second degree murder and attempted murder in the March, 1997 incident that left her five-year-old daughter dead and her three-year-old son seriously injured.

She was sentenced in 1998 to life in prison with no chance of parole for 10 years.

Hysop was first granted an escorted temporary absence from her correctional facility in 2012, but it was cancelled when she breached one of the conditions of her release.

The woman was again granted a temporary absence in December of 2017, this time with no breaches.

In a decision dated March 21, the Parole Board of Canada has now granted Hysop six months of escorted day parole.

She must return to her Lower Mainland residential detention facility every night, and cannot come within 100 kilometres of her son.

The parole board says Hysop still demonstrates “no discernible remorse,” but concludes she is at a low risk to reoffend.
