Union rolls the dice on new contract

KAMLOOPS — Workers at Cascades Casino in Kamloops walked off the job Friday after talks between BCGEU and employer Gateway Casinos failed to resolve their labour dispute. 

Shortly after 3 p.m., unionized workers walked out of the casino and into the pouring rain. 

Calling for fair wages, the employees picked up signs and flags, drawing attention from passing vehicles. 

The union’s previous collective agreement with Gateway Casinos ended last September, and employees have been asking for a significant increase in pay.

“We are hoping to achieve industry standards for the wages. We want to be on par with other casinos in B.C,” said local union spokesperson Melissa Frank.

“We work for a very successful company in a highly profitable industry, and they can afford to pay us fair wages and that’s what we’re hoping to achieve.” 

Gateway says it plans to stay open despite the job action.
