Kamloops flirts with weather record as above seasonal temperatures persist

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops just barely missed breaking a temperature record on Sunday (Jan 21). 

The highest temperature recorded in the city on this day was 9 degrees, set back in 1981. 

Environment Canada Meteorologist Ross MacDonald says Kamloops reached 8.6 degrees during the noon hour, just barely missing the mark. 

“We may have actually reached our peak with the atmosphere mixing out quite nicely this afternoon with some pretty breezy conditions, with winds kind of up to about 60 km/hr throughout the Kamloops area today,” MacDonald said.

Regardless, Sunday’s temperature was well above seasonal.

“Typically this time of year our average high is about 0. At 8 degrees we’re certainly quite warm, a little bit warmer than normal for this time of year.” 

MacDonald says the warm temperatures will continue into the work week, with no indication of a strong push of Arctic air heading this way. 

“Some flurries will come across on Tuesday, and then linger a little bit on Wednesday,” MacDonald says, “But, temperatures will remain mild, certainly on the plus side of zero for the most part, staying above normal really right through this work week. All-in-all not a bad way to end January.”
