CANDLELIGHT VIGIL PLANNED FOR HAMILTON BOY

A candlelight vigil is planned tonight in a Hamilton neighbourhood left reeling by the death of Finnigan Danne, 11. The boy, who suffered from a neuromuscular disorder and had limited mobility, went missing from his home early Saturday. An Amber Alert was issued the following day and his body was later found in a culvert close to his house. Police believe the death was an accident.

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL CALL FOR SITE WORK TO STOP

Amnesty International is calling for a stop work order on British Columbia’s $8.8 billion Site C hydroelectric dam, saying the mega project on the Peace River threatens the human rights of indigenous peoples. The human rights group is calling on the federal and provincial governments to immediately suspend or rescind all construction approvals and permits related to the project in northeast B.C.

VALEANT SET TO REPORT SECOND QUARTER RESULTS

Montreal-based pharma giant Valeant Pharmaceuticals will report ts second-quarter results today. It was the most valuable company in Canada by market capitalization a year ago, but has since seen nearly 90 per cent of its value evaporate. The company has changed CEOs as it struggles to rebuild pubic and investor trust.

TRUMP CAMPAIGN SAYS HE’D RESURRECT KEYSTONE XL

Donald Trump’s campaign says that if elected president he will ask Calgary-based pipeline company TransCanada Corp. to re-submit its proposal for the stalled Keystone XL pipeline. The project was rejected by U.S. President Barack Obama. TransCanada recently filed for NAFTA arbitration and is seeking $15 billion in damages, claiming the rejection was arbitrary and politically driven.

CANADA ENJOYS FIRST MULTI-MEDAL DAY IN RIO

Canadians scooped up a pair of bronze medals on Day 3 of the Rio Olympics to raise its total to four — one silver and three bronze. One of the bronze medals was captured by Canada’s women’s rugby sevens team, which beat Britain 33-10 in the Olympic debut for the sport.  Yesterday’s other bronze medal was won in the pool when Kylie Masse of La Salle, Ont., finished tied for third in the women’s 100-metre backstroke.
