Cenotaph clocks won’t keep time by Remembrance Day

The park grounds have been improved, the door to the cenotaph has been refurbished, and years of pollution have been cleaned off the stone. But the most significant part of the renovation is yet to be completed.

“You’ll notice that the clock dials have been taken out,” said Julia Cyr, Kamloops Museum Supervisor. “A lot of broken glass was in behind, and that’s all being replaced with new glass and then of course a (plexiglass) in front that is unbreakable, and that’s wonderful, but you can see through, so you can see that beautiful white glass on the inside.”

Initially the hope was to have the cenotaph clocks ready by Remembrance Day, and while that deadline has been pushed back, work on the clocks should be complete before the new year.

“It’s a delicate process,” Cyr said. “We’re dealing with really old mechanics, so we’ve taken our time with this, which is really important to make sure that we get this restoration right. So the clocks, they won’t be functioning by this November 11, but we hope in the couple of weeks after November 11.”
