Famous Australian choir performing in Kamloops tonight

KAMLOOPS — A prestigious choir from Australia has travelled from Down Under and is making a stop in Kamloops as part of a tour of B.C.  

The Hunter Singers is a globally-renowned choir group composed of 30 high school students from Newcastle, Australia. Formed in 1989, the choir has a varied repertoire, performing contemporary and traditions works. The Kamloops Symphony is hosting the group, and they are performing tonight (Tuesday) at 7:30 at the Kamloops United Church.

“It’s really interesting and it’s a great opportunity for the community to see what some other cultures are doing in terms of their choral music because that’s one of the things that this particular choir does, is showcase Australian choral music,” says executive director of the Kamloops Symphony Society Kathy Humphreys. “Also I think it’s great for kids here that are singing and have an opportunity to hear some other young people.”    

The performance is part of a fundraiser for the Kamloops Symphony Music School and the school’s Peter Collins Memorial Bursary. Collins passed away in May 2015. The bursary provides access to music lessons for students who may not otherwise be able to afford them.

“The first year, we kept $500 of the donations that we received so we could do one bursary,” notes Humphreys. “Then the second year we had about $800 to hand out, and this year it’s $2,000, so we’ll probably give out four $500 bursaries. As it grows, the income from it will grow and we’ll be able to do more. It’s really a great thing for the community.”

The performance is expected to bring in about $3,000 with half of the money going to the Hunter Singers choir and the other half going towards the Peter Collins Memorial Bursary.
