President Donald Trump‘s previous policy of separating immigrant children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexico border continues to inspire outrage. Actress Maggie Gyllenhaal has teamed up with the American Civil Liberties Union on a video that portrays one mother’s despair.
A-listers including Ryan Reynolds, Amy Schumer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Chadwick Boseman and Glenn Close all participated, reading an affidavit from a woman named Mirian. The Honduran asylum seeker has been separated from her son, who turned two on July 4th.
Mirian is part of the ACLU’s class-action family separation lawsuit.
FAST FACTS:
- Trump has signed three executive orders on immigration so far. The travel ban, “Protecting the Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States,” has been blocked by a federal judge and an appellate court.
- Trump’s family separation policy was enforced in April, resulting in 2,300 kids being separated from their parents at the border. In June, he signed an executive order reversing the policy.
- Several other celebrities have spoken out against the policy. Earlier this month Chrissy Teigen and John Legend donated $288K to the ACLU in honor of Trump’s birthday.
