BC River Forecast Centre: Flood risk ‘near normal’ in Kamloops area

KAMLOOPS — Despite this week’s forecast warm temperatures, the flood risk remains “near normal” along the large rivers in the Kamloops area.

David Campbell, head of the River Forecast Centre, made the comment during a provincial teleconference Monday.

He said the snowpack for both the North and South Thompson Rivers are 109 per cent of normal, which is considered “near normal for this time of year.”

“In terms of the bigger rivers we’re still very early in the freshet season. I think this warm weather will start to kick off some of that melt,” Campbell said. “The larger river systems like the North and South Thompson and the Fraser, you’re very early to have much of a concern at this point. We’re several weeks away at this point before those get to their seasonal highs and pose much of a concern.”

He says much of the concern remains in the South Okanagan where conditions the last week or so have been challenged.

“We expect that to be exacerbated with this melt. Tributaries up and down the Okanagan, the central Interior: Cache Creek, Cariboo, in and around the tributaries around the Nicola as well. We expect all those areas could flare up and we could see much more accelerated melt and streamflow as we go into the latter part of this week and into the weekend.”
