Calgary Stampeders’ Dave Dickenson named CFL’s coach of the year

TORONTO — Dave Dickenson of the Calgary Stampeders is the CFL’s coach of the year.

He was honoured Thursday night at the league’s awards banquet.

Rick Campbell of the Ottawa Redblacks, last year’s winner, was the other finalist.

Voting was conducted by the Football Reporters of Canada and nine CFL head coaches.

Dickenson guided Calgary to a league-best 15-2-1 record in his first season as head coach. The 15 victories is a CFL single-season record for a rookie head coach.

Ottawa (8-9-1) finished atop the East Division for the second straight year under Campbell, who’s in his third season as the Redblacks head coach.

Ottawa will make its second straight Grey Cup appearance Sunday when it faces Calgary at BMO Field. The Redblacks lost last year’s final 26-20 to Edmonton.
