Gwyneth Paltrow, Surviving the Haters

Jul 26, 2018 | 6:00 AM

Gwyneth Paltrow has made her name as an Oscar-winning actress, bestselling author and phenomenally successful entrepreneur, but she has her share of insecurities too, she tells The New York Times.

In a lengthy profile, she opens up about the widespread backlash she got during her separation from Chris Martin in 2014. As anyone who hasn’t been hiding under a rock for the past few years will recall, they memorably described their separation as a “conscious uncoupling.”

On being labeled “the most hated celebrity in the world”, Paltrow said: “I remember being like, ‘Really? More than, like, Chris Brown? Me? Really? Wow.’ It was also the same week that I was People‘s Most Beautiful Woman. For a minute I was like, ‘Wait, I don’t understand. Am I hated to the bone or am I the world’s most beautiful?’ “

Paltrow also discussed the blowback she’s received for her wellness website, Goop. Among some of their more lambasted “expert” advice: GMOs cause depression, bee-sting treatments that killed a woman, putting jade eggs in your vagina, unpronounceable vitamins/powders for vague and difficult to substantiate disorders. Making matters worse in critics’ minds is the fact that Goop sells many of their “remedies” on the website.

Paltrow admits that while the attention has helped drive traffic, it has caused her to have second thoughts. The Times explains: “After a few too many cultural firestorms, and with investors to think about, G.P. made some changes. Goop has hired a lawyer to vet all claims on the site. It hired an editor away from Cond Nast to run the magazine. It hired a man with a Ph.D. in nutritional science, and a director of science and research who is a former Stanford professor. And in September, Goop, sigh, is hiring a full-time fact-checker. G.P. chose to see it as ‘necessary growing pain.’”

The profile continues that while Paltrow was supposed to partner with Cond Nast on its nascent magazine, she pulled out due to the publishing company’s too-stringent standards, which require “traditional backup for scientific claims, like double-blind, peer-reviewed studies.”
