KAMLOOPS — A new pay-by-phone service is aiming to make parking easier in downtown Kamloops.

The City of Kamloops says in a news release that “Whoosh” is a new parking application that uses GPS locations to automatically identify the user’s location.

“Drivers can now pay and extend time remotely on their smartphone, whether they are in their parked vehicle, at an appointment, in their seat at Sandman Centre, or at wherever their final downtown destination may be,” the release states.

Whoosh has been integrated with the City’s parking systems to provide a real-time service for pay parking by cellphone. The app is available for a free download with a smartphone or desktop, and users need a valid credit card to complete a one-time account registration.

“We heard what the public had to say with the challenges of the previous mobile service provider,” John Ramsay, the City’s bylaw services manager, says. “This new system will allow for expiry notifications and time extensions directly from a user’s phone. We believe we have found a provider that is user friendly for all.”

The Whoosh app is available for downtown street parking and parking in City-owned downtown lots. Once a user registers, they can open the app and select the parking location closest to their vehicle. The system shows a green pin for lot parking or a pink pin for street parking. Once the location has been selected, the user can choose the duration and confirm payment.

The app will also send expiry notifications, allowing users to extend their time if an extension is available, directly from their current location.  The City recommends paying for parking as soon as possible to avoid a ticket.
