Operation Red Nose looking for Kamloops volunteers

KAMLOOPS — The season for Christmas parties and celebrations is just around the corner, which means volunteers are needed for Operation Red Nose.

Some of the busiest nights of the year for rides home occur between November and December, and Operation Red Nose coordinator for Kamloops, Shanon Guglielmini, says roughly 600 volunteer shifts need to be filled for the holiday season.

“So if people can volunteer one night, that’s fantastic, if they can do multiple nights, even better,” Guglielmini says. “We’ll take what we can get and we’ll fill those spots.”

Even if potential volunteers don’t know quite yet what their availability will be like for nights of service, Guglielmini says it’s important to get the ball rolling on the process with preparations like a criminal record check to be completed.

Roles from drivers to dispatchers are available for volunteers. During nights of service, teams of three will hit the road once a dispatcher directs the “navigator” where to go. After that, one person will hop in your car with you to drive it safely home, and the other two will follow in a volunteer car.

“The navigator’s there for safety, and also for doing paperwork — filling out to and from — and if any donations get made the navigator looks after that,” says Guglielmini.

It’s a totally free service, but Operation Red Nose does rely on donations. Guglielmini says all donations go to Pacific Sport in Kamloops, which goes toward amateur athletes and coaches for things like programs, services and travel grants.

If you want to be part of Operation Red Nose, there are a few skills you’ll want to have.

“If they want to work in the office part, a good phone manner, being able to answer, listen to the phones, often times people call in and they’re not the most clear of speech,” laughs Guglielmini, “so they need to be able to listen and write down information… If you want to be a driver, obviously you have to have a cleared drivers licence, the criminal record check has to be done because we are working with a vulnerable sector, and that’s pretty much it. A happy attitude and a willingness to stay up late.”
