KAMLOOPS — The Village of Cache Creek has declared a state of local emergency as spring flooding pours into the streets.
Mayor John Ranta signed the state of local emergency last night after the creek overflowed its banks.
“Parts of Cache Creek are running down Highway 97 and Highway 1,” Ranta said. “There’s quite a bit of water pooling on Highway 1 down by the Husky Station. We’ve got Quartz road closed off, which is right next to the fire hall, and Cache Creek has overwhelmed the culvert under the road and is running over the road.”
However, Ranta says flood preparation work has been paying off.
“The volunteer fire department sandbagged in front of the fire hall, and if they hadn’t done that we would have been overwhelmed inside the fire hall like we were in 2015 and 2017.”
A sandbagging event will be taking place at the Cache Creek Coverall throughout the day to help out residents with homes at risk of flooding.
