Wind and snow will hit B.C. today and tomorrow

KAMLOOPS —    Many people across British Columbia are enjoying a long weekend today, but B-C Hydro crews are bracing for anything but a holiday as powerful winds are forecast to hammer Vancouver Island and the south coast today.

     Environment Canada says the intense system will pack winds of up to 80 kilometres per hour by late this morning and Hydro is reporting outages in Metro Vancouver, while B-C Ferries has cancelled two early runs of the Comox to Powell River ferry because of the bad conditions.

     Elsewhere, forecasters are calling for snow north of Squamish — with as much as 20 centimetres blanketing Whistler this morning before turning to rain — and a snowfall warning is also in effect for the Peace River region where as much as 15 centimetres is expected in some areas.

     In the Cariboo and Prince George areas, dense fog — sometimes cutting visibility to near zero — is the problem this morning but the weather office says the fog should clear as northerly winds develop later this morning.

While the Coquihalla Highway doesn’t have a snowfall warning, that doesn’t mean there won’t be some white stuff between Kamloops and Hope over the next couple of days.

Environment Canada says 5 centimeters of snow are forecast between Hope and Merritt today, 10-15 centimeters tonight, and yet another 10-15 centimeters of snow again tomorrow.

Lesser amounts are forecast between Kamloops and Merritt, but there will still be some snow, and it could be mixed with rain at times.
