“If you want to know where you may fit in[to the film industry], this is a good one to take. This is the course that will help them determine where their skills will be utilized best,” Weller explained about the curriculum she’ll be teaching this weekend. “What we find in the TNRD is that crews are generally looking for production assistants and construction workers… [having those pre-existing skills] makes them much more employable.”

According to a report from the Canadian Media Producers that came out at the beginning of February, production volume in Canada was worth $8.38 billion last year, with BC’s film industry accounting for just under $3 billion. Weller says the Thompson Nicola region’s strength is the locations it can provide to filmmakers; with the more qualified crew in the area, it would make it easier to attract some of that volume to the interior.
