New Kamloops rail terminal “could employ hundreds”

KAMLOOPS — Cando Rail Services has announced its plan to build a massive new rail terminal on the former Weyerhaeuser sawmill site along Mission Flats Road in Kamloops.

The Manitoba-based company closed its purchase of the property at the end of last year, paying a reported $5.1 million for the 89 acre site that includes Rabbit Island.

In a news release, the company says the terminal will serve as its BC headquarters, and could employ hundreds of people once it is fully operational.

Cando says the terminal on the property will be “extensive,” and will include 1,000 railcar storage spots, 80,000 feet of track, transload areas as well as engineering and mechanical servicing areas.

The company says it chose Kamloops for its regional hub due to its easy access to mainline traffic from both CN and CP railways, and its connections to ports in Vancouver and Prince Rupert.

There is no word on when construction will begin.
