“It’s a good opportunity for us to help out members of our community who may not be able to purchase the ribs at the park,” PIT Stop coordinator Rick Windjack explains. “[They] come here on Sunday afternoon and have their rib meal with us, and we’re to be able to do that.”

Cheryl Martin, from Martin & Martin Law Firm, is the team lead for the Ribfest. She says being able to provide a special meal to those in the community who don wouldn’t be able to enjoy some ribs otherwise is a special opportunity.

“When the opportunity came last year for us to step in and help prepare this… we just thought it was an opportunity to step in and help the community,” Martin says.

Apart from the racks of ribs, there’s another tie-in with RibFest: the Rotary clubs throughout the city all support the PIT Stop program, and RibFest is one of Rotary’s most important fundraisers throughout the year.

“Not a dime that comes in through RibFest is spent by a Rotarian on a Rotarian,” Rotary Daybreak spokesperson Bryce Herman explains. “It really goes back, with a focus on seniors and youth programs, but one of the other things we do is we supper the PIT Stop dinners… it’s not just our Rotary Club, but all the Rotary Clubs in Kamloops.”

For Cheryl Martin, the chance to help provide a special meal for those in need is an important service.

“Otherwise, this wouldn’t be available to them,” Martin says. “to have the Food Bank step up the way they do, Lyon’s Landscaping actually donated all the corn for this year. I know it was very well received last year.”

And there’s no doubt Rib Feast is a special meal for many of Kamloops most vulnerable. The event draws one of the biggest crowds PIT Stop gets for any of the meals they serve, which means PIT Stop needs have enough food to make sure no one goes away hungry.

“Louise at the Food Bank has been saving ribs for us for literally months, planning for this day,” Windjack says. “[It’s a] really awesome experience getting to work with the Food Bank in that manner.”
