Change unlikely for Zimbabwe says Kamloops pastor

KAMLOOPS — The long time autocratic leader of Zimbabwe – President Robert Mugabe – resigned yesterday. Some believe his resignation will bring change to the African country but a Kamloops man who is running for president of Zimbabwe isn’t holding his breath.

Kamloops pastor Richard Kanyangu says while Mugabe’s announcement led to a public demonstration of joy and dancing in the streets, it’s difficult to know if a new party leader will bring concrete change to a country that is suffering through economic turmoil.

“They’ve sacrificed Robert Mugabe but the whole system remains entrenched. We have to look beyond one individual and understand that the death of the country has been caused by a multitude of people in the ZANU-PF. If we really want to see change we need to get rid of all of ZANU-PF but we need to give them the benefit of the doubt because this is where we’re at at this moment.”

Kanyangu is leader of the United Party in Zimbabwe. He says the country needs a younger leader if it wants to see improvements.
