Biosolid truck spills load into creek

CLINTON, B.C. — The Regional District of Central Okanagan says the risk to the public is minimal after one of its contractor trucks carrying biosolids flipped and dumped part of its load into a creek bed.

The truck was taking the biosolids from the RDCO’s sewage plant near West Kelowna to the OK Ranch in the South Cariboo, and crashed on Big Bar Road.

RDCO spokesman Bruce Smith says the driver suffered minor injuries, and responding crews turned their attention to the cleanup.

“As soon as everybody was made aware of the accident the emergency protocols kicked in. They responded immediately, they got to the site, secured it,” said Smith adding, “last night and into today crews have been doing cleanup at the site to contain and clean up the spilled materials.”

Smith attributed the amount of material spilled totaled about five cubic metres.

He notes the Ministry of Environment and Interior Health have been notified, and IHA believes there is little risk to the public.

Even so, the public is being asked to stay away from the area of the crash until officials rule out any potential risks.

Smith adds RDCO and other agencies will monitor the water quality in Big Bar Creek over the next week.
