Students exceed fundraising goal for Nicaraguan garbage community

KAMLOOPS — Students in School District 73 are counting every last penny they’ve raised over the last month before they’re sent to help a small community in Nicaragua. 

The campaign ‘Change For Change,’ involving schools like Parkcrest Elementary, is in its final stages, and the total so far have far exceeded expectations, raising over $2,500 with the help of three other schools in the district. 

The funds will go to El Limonal, a community of about 2,000 people in Nicaragua who live and work in a garbage dump. The money raised is enough to buy hampers for everyone there, and there are now plans in the works to build a home as well.
