Speedy free agent Oduro opts to stay with Impact on two-year contract

MONTREAL — Forward Dominic Oduro has signed a two-year contract to remain with the Montreal Impact, the Major League Soccer club announced Monday.

The fleet-footed 31-year-old, who became a free agent on Dec. 13, opted to stay in Montreal where he had six goals and six assists in 31 games this season.

“Dominic has been an important part of our success in the last two years and has fit in nicely with the club and the city,” technical director Adam Braz said in a statement. “His pace and ability to get in behind defenders has led to his important offensive contribution to the team.

“His experience and team first mentality will continue to be important within our group.”

The Impact acquired Oduro from Toronto FC in exchange for allocation money on Jan. 27, 2015.

In 60 regular season games over two seasons, the Ghana native has 14 goals and six assists. As a U.S. citizen, Oduro does not count as a foreign player.

“I am very happy to come back with the Impact, where I have enjoyed a lot of success with the club, as well as individually, and found more consistency and connection with my teammates,” said Oduro. “I also have a strong connection with the fans, which made my decision even easier to return.”

Last season, he was tied for eighth in MLS with three game-winning assists and was named once to the MLS team of the week.

He added two goals and three assists in five playoff games as a starter as the Impact reached the Eastern Conference final.

Oduro also played all six games as the Impact reached the 2015 CONCACAF Champions League final.

In 311 career MLS regular season games with Dallas, the New York Red Bulls, Houston, Chicago, Columbus, Toronto and Montreal, Oduro has 62 goals and 32 assists.
