Spring Break- one week or two?

KAMLOOPS — Kamloops School Board still can’t seem to make up its mind on whether or not it wants a one-week spring break or two.

Trustees had voted earlier this year to go back to a one-week spring break in 2018, after a three year experiment with two weeks.

But then they decided to get more input. Last night, they again voted, by a 6-3 margin, to go back to a one-week break, but there’s a big BUT.

They will negotiate with teachers and CUPE support staff, and if they can reach agreement by the end of the school year, they will change their minds again and go to a two-week break.

Kamloops-Thompson is one of only a handful of Districts in the province which technically still has a one-week break.

A large delegation of teachers attended last night’s meeting, and said they were upset that the Trustees hadn’t listened to the input calling for a permanent move to a two-week break.

KTTA President David Komljenovic said teachers would have preferred a decision one way or the other on the matter. He said the vast majority of the input Trustees received from all sides called for a two-week break.

Board Chair Meghan Wade said a lot of districts went to a two-week break to save money, and School District 73 wants to make the move because it’s the best for students, not for the bottom line.

It’s believed negotiation might involve contract language, which may have to be approved by the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, which bargains for all teachers in the province.
