Kamloops council looking into bylaw officer safety

KAMLOOPS — Bylaw enforcement was under discussion at council yesterday, February 23rd.

Bylaw Services wants council to look at improving the safety of bylaw officers doing their duty about the city.

Officers are asking the city to look at giving enforcement officers defensive weapons to help protect them in case of dangerous situations.

Handcuffs, pepper spray and batons have been mentioned as possible weapons to be handed out to officers.

In an increasingly confrontational society, officers feel the weapons will give them a better opportunity to defend themselves.

Council is still looking at the idea.

Parking revenues are up, parking tickets are down.

A report to council shows almost $2 million brought in last year through parking fees.

In the meantime, the number of tickets issued by enforcement officers is down to its lowest level in eight years.

New pay options and the ability for people to park longer are believed to have contributed to the drop in tickets.
